My Pound Puppy

My fur baby is Sweetie, in the picture above. Sweetie is a pound puppy. One day I decided to wander off to the pound to see if I could find a dog Id like. I had a Jack Russell yrs ago and still missed her. It was time for a new pet. I really didn't expect to find anything that day I just decided it was time to start looking. I wanted a small dog. My Jack was fairly sm. to med. so that was a nice size. I could still pick her up and manage her. I wandered around the place tho and there were not many small dogs at all.

All the dogs at the pound were just nuts .....barking and growling and running around. Actually they annoyed me. Right next to this insane pit bull in a cage (which did get adopted btw, by a family!) was Sweetie. She was not like the others.......she was lying there's just like you see in the picture above only she was terrified.......and shaking. It broke my heart. But she was still way too big of a dog. But somehow as I wandered around I couldn't forget her. I went back one final time and she wiggled her eyebrows at me (don't laugh, they do that!) and that was it for me......you see my Jack used to do that to me too. So I got an attendant there to let me see her closer. They give you a leash and let you take them outside in an enclosed area to see how they behave. She seemed nice and wandered the area.

I spent quite a bit of time with her out there and I couldn't understand why she was there, she was a real sweet dog. I tried to think of a name for her. Tried several things then absent mindedly called her Sweetie, cuz I called my grandkids that. She turned right around and came right to me! I did it several times with the same results.......whoaaaaaaaa is that luck? is that her real name or does she just like it? I talked to the people there and they said she was abandoned but that she had been abused by a man.

I decided she was mine but I couldn't take her home yet. This was a thurs. late. They fix the dogs on thurs. and mon. I would have to wait till mon. to get her after the surgery. When I went to pay for her the girl said oh your the lady getting her? I wanted to take her home , we all did shes such a sweet dog. But shes got big trust issues with men you know. I told the girl......I just went thru a divorce, so do I. Sounds like shes going to the perfect home huh? and laughed.

I went to visit her every day till I could take her home that Mon. Even took my grand daughter with me. But what was really funny is she knew she belonged to me that very day, how do they know that? When I came back I peeked thru the window where she was and she was in the position I saw her in the first time....on the floor shaking. And yet once she saw me , it all stopped and she perked up and got excited again.

She did have issues with men and over time shes learned to trust me and any guys around me. My son in law used to live here with my daughter for awhile and Sweetie would wait for him to come home from work so she could play with him. Shes learned that hands in this house don't hurt and men can be ok. In fact shes the one who picked my bf..............she knew he was a good guy long before I did. Imagine that? Now she loves him so much she sleeps on his side of the bed. She will not come up on the bed with me tho ! (Hmmm, maybe shes trying to steal him from me!) So there's my two furry babies. Funny we all have matching red hair too !

BTW Sweetie is not the small dog I wanted, when they weighed her she was just 40lbs and you could see her ribs. But its funny cuz if she weighed more I would have had to pay more, the cut off for her size dog was 40lbs! How nice of her to save her new mommy some money already lol. Had her to the vets recently tho and shes now 60 lbs of Whippet/lab and God knows what else mix.

  1. Your Sweetie is a beautiful gurl! :)

There is someting about their eyes when they look into yours and the wag of their tail, that secures the deal that they will be joining your family. All our furbabies babies except one (Trinity) were either from the shelters or ferrals. We have never begrudged or regretted any of the additions to our family over the years. Each and every one has enhanced our lives and when some of them passed from old age or illness, it was as if one of our limbs had been cut off without the benifit of painkillers. When we lost our old gurl Sierra to Mets bone cancer, it tore our hearts out. She was my fur sister and close companion. Its been over a year, but even typing this to you brings tears to my eyes. - Pen
